Herring Season again at Pt Holmes

 by Keith and Heather Nicol

Well it is herring season again and on Thursday , March 11 we counted 40 boats off of Pt Holmes involved in the catch. I don’t think we have ever seen so many people and cars in that parking area at Pt Holmes and certainly have never seen those kinds of number of fishing boats just off shore. Unfortunately we didn’t see the feeding frenzy we have seen other years with sea lions, eagles and sea gulls all in the mix trying to get their share of this abundance. Although we did see the odd fins of sea lions poking out of the water , we didn’t hear their distinctive barking or the large groups of sea lions. But we plan to check it out again over the next few days since it is always an amazing site and Pt Holmes is often a good viewing area. We also checked out nearby Kye Bay and there were a few fishing boats there as well but again no feeding activity that we could see. So be sure to check this out over the next few days. We will certainly be back.
