Humber Valley Hikers start a new season

       The Humber Valley Hikers has started its 2012 hiking season with a fine hike to Cedar Cove near Little Port in the Bay of Islands. Judie Gushue is an avid hiker and coordinator of the Humber Valley Hikers. She lives in Corner Brook and we chatted to her while walking the 1.8 km (1 way trail) to Cedar Cove on Sunday, May 13. "I am pleased that we had 16 hikers out for our first hike of the season" said Judie.

        "We have an extensive series of hikes planned for this coming season. The plan is to have weekly hikes from now on until mid October and local residents and visitors to the area are welcome to join us on any of our hikes. These hikes range from short hikes like this one to Cedar Cove to longer treks like the 16 km hike the top of Gros Morne Mountain. And we have some of the best coastal and mountain hiking in Newfoundland right on our doorstep in the Bay of Islands and we enjoy showing this landscape off to anyone that wants to come along. Descending off the raised terrace to the beach at Cedar Cove

     For walkers wanting to do the Cedar Cove hike simply drive from Corner Brook to Little Port at the end of the south shore highway. Park in the large lot but be careful not to block areas used by local fishermen. At the end of the parking lot you will see some stairs which leads to the start of the trail. For those with at GPS the coordinates of the trail head are: UTM 21 0396295E  5440174N.  The trail is fairly level and well marked to Cedar Cove where the wide beach is surrounded by steep cliffs and loaded with drift wood.
